Why McFarlane's on fire

Why McFarlane's on fire

TRAINER Greg McFarlane's star is on the rise. His strike-rate of one winner every two runners is extraordinary.

He has just applied to the Sydney Turf Club for extra stable boxes for his growing number of clients.

And the trainer has an opportunity to snare a feature race double with Oopsy Doopsy ($100,000 Winter Championship) and Biggietupac ($70,000 The Rosebud) at Rosehill Gardens tomorrow.

McFarlane, who played lower level NRL and was a former champion cyclist who represented Australia and Italy, is now making a name for himself in the "Sport of Kings".

In the last three months, he has saddled up 31 runners for 15 wins, five seconds, four third and five fourths.

His stable star is Oopsy Doopsy, a two-time Rosehill winner during this period. She is nominated for two races tomorrow but McFarlane favours the tougher Winter Championship rather than the Thredbo Handicap.

"The barrier draw was crucial and when she drew five for the Winter Championship, I decided we would tackle that race because she has drawn 10 of 11 in the other race," McFarlane said.

"The rail is out 8m and with the track heavy it might turn out to be a front-running track. From barrier five, Oopsy Doopsy can race close to the pace in the Winter Championship."

Oopsy Doopsy has won twice - including her impressive last start win over Hus Der Leiften over 1400m at Rosehill two weeks ago - from five starts this campaign and has earned prize money every run.

Biggietupac, a lightly-raced rising three-year-old filly, won the Silver Goblet at Dubbo first-up earlier this month and is highly regarded by her trainer.

"I rate this filly better than Oopsy Doopsy as a two-year-old and I think in six months she is going to be a very nice horse," McFarlane said.

"The problem for her in The Rosebud is the barrier - she's out in 10 and that is not ideal."

McFarlane's recent success has prompted the trainer to apply to the STC for another 20 boxes at Rosehill, effectively doubling the size of his stable.

"Hopefully, it will keep snow-balling from here," he said.
