Clements speaks out

Clements speaks out

EXCLUSIVE: NEVILLE Clements is tired. Tired of the questions about the suitability of his friendship with jockey Danny Nikolic.

Tired of the innuendo that some of his recent bets on betting exchange Betfair, where he laid horses ridden by Nikolic, may be down to more than just smart form analysis.

"I probably haven't wanted to talk a lot, because I'm just bloody annoyed and frustrated," the professional punter said. "But what's the use of saying, `No comment.' I may as well just tell it as I see it."

Former bookmaker Clements is at the centre of two inquiries in two states that both involve the Nikolic family: one in Victoria and the other in Queensland.

In Melbourne, stewards are looking into Danny Nikolic's performance on 10 horses, in conjunction with investigating Clements' betting trends.

Most of his Betfair bets were that the Nikolic-ridden horses would finish unplaced.

Meanwhile, stewards in Queensland are examining the run of Baby Boom, trained by Nikolic's brother John, at Caloundra in January. Clements successfully bet against Baby Boom with Betfair.

But it is his relationship with Danny Nikolic that has hogged the headlines.

Clements said they became friends in 2003.

"Danny rings me, obviously. And he rings me for guidance as in pace in races and the hardest horses for him to beat," he said.

But what of the January 1 phone call Nikolic made to Clements before riding Atlantic Air to victory at Flemington? (Nikolic has been charged for using his phone to call Clements that day without the permission of stewards).

"Danny wanted to just check and make sure (his horse) should still go forward," Clements said. "He led all the way and won."

Clements has denied he bet on the race, and said that while the call "may be against the rules", it was purely about form.

Clements himself faces a charge of not giving up his phone records. He has not decided whether to relent and submit them, but said: "I don't think it's right".

Despite the charge, the scrutiny, and the freezing of his Betfair account, Clements is in no mood to change the way he bets.

"If and when I get my Betfair account back, I'll be definitely laying horses the next day," he said. "Whether they're ridden by him (Nikolic) or Damien Oliver . . . it's just a form assessment."
