Devil May Care completed a successful breeding story for trainer Wayne Nichols when she won the Listed Bob Hoysted Handicap (1000m) at Flemington.

Nichols bred the five-year-old as well as Diplomatic Force and Wilsons Promontory in the one season and all have been stakes winners or stakes placed.

"They were all out of mares that I raced and all have ended up getting black type," Nichols said.

Devil May Care only ran on Saturday after she was unable to race last Sunday when the Echuca meeting was abandoned.

"When they called the races off at Echuca there were only three 1000 metre races in the next 10 weeks she could run in so we chanced our arm here and it worked," Nichols said.

Ridden by Dean Holland, Devil May Care ($21) came down the grandstand rail and led all the way to score by a short head from Solchow ($8) and Mrs Waters ($31), who led the charge on the flat side on the track.

Devil May Care is by Umatilla from Destry Girl who was a prolific winner for Nichols.

"She won 11 races for us and a few in town," Nichols said.

Diplomatic Force, who is a dual stakes winner in Adelaide, is by Oamaru Force from Talk It Over while Wilsons Promontory by Promontory Gold from Spring Gift was Group Three placed in the Pacific Finance Stakes at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate Day in 2007.

Destry Girl has produced seven winners but Devil May Care is her first stakes winner.

"She (Devil May Care) has won three in town but this great," Nichols said.

"It is the first black type in the pedigree for a while so it is really pleasing."

A past Flemington winner, Devil May Care hadn't raced down the straight at Flemington since last August when she finished third to Eagle Falls.

"It was probably not bad form going in to this Listed race, Nichols said.
