Hayes shock inquiry

Trainer David Hayes will face an inquiry into the use of shockwave therapy on one of his horses which led to its withdrawal from a race at Moonee Valley.

Trainer David Hayes will face an inquiry into the use of shockwave therapy on one of his horses which led to its withdrawal from a race at Moonee Valley.

Racing Victoria stewards ordered the scratching of Poison Ivy from the Tatts Group Handicap after confirming the filly had been given shockwave treatment on the Wednesday before the Friday night meeting.

Under the rules of racing shockwave treatment is prohibited within seven days of a race or trial.

Shockwave therapy was the focus of a controversial aftermath to the 2008 Melbourne Cup when it was found that runner-up Bauer had been treated within seven days of finishing second to Viewed.

The English stayer was treated in the Sandown quarantine centre by an RVL veterinary surgeon.

Bauer's placing was unaffected after stewards accepted that trainer Luca Cumani was entitled to assume the vet knew the local rules.

Electro shock wave treatment is widely used around the world where it is allowed up until race eve in most jurisdictions

A date has yet to be set for the inquiry.

Hayes was in Perth last Friday but will be required to give evidence along with stable manager Gary Fennessy and the vets involved at a date to be fixed.
