Lyons has autumn plans for Drenalin

Former champion jockey Peter Cook's nephew James Lyons hopes to play a starring role at next year's Sydney autumn carnival with exciting sprinter Drenalin.

Former champion jockey Peter Cook's nephew James Lyons hopes to play a starring role at next year's Sydney autumn carnival with exciting sprinter Drenalin.

Lyons, who is a real-estate salesman in Brisbane, has a two-horse stable at Deagon and may have hit the jackpot with four-year-old Drenalin who led all the way to win Saturday's Carlton Mid Country Cup (1200m) at Eagle Farm.

Drenalin showed his win at Eagle farm a fortnight earlier was no fluke by showing blistering speed from his wide barrier to score by 1-3/4 lengths.

"I'll probably put him away now over the summer and bring him back for the autumn in Sydney," Lyons said.

"I sell real estate and I've only got two horses in work, this bloke and his half sister.

"I'm shooting for the stars with him and I might be dreaming but he's a very good horse."

Lyons trained Drenalin's mother Gee Eye Jane, who had five wins and eight placings in a 21-start career, and maintained a relationship with her owners so he could continue to train her progeny.

Lyons paid tribute to apprentice Justin Woods, who produced a daring ride to lead all the way on the son of Monashee Mountain.

"It was a great ride. From the alley we had plan A,B and C and plan A won," he said.

Wood, 18, made a huge impression with his aggressive riding manner to score his first metropolitan win on Drenalin.

"I thought with 50 kilos our best option was to lead," Wood said.

"I want to start kicking off here in town. It's my first city winner and it was a mid strength country Cup.

"I've been riding a lot of winners at the provincials.

"I broke my femur in January and had four months off and I made a decision then to focus more on town when I came back."
